Curriculum

Education at St Francis’ aims to be exciting, stimulating and challenging.  We provide a wide range of learning experiences matched to the ability, needs, interest and experience of individual children.

The curriculum is designed to help children develop the essential skills of literacy and numeracy so that they become skilful in the use of language, reading and writing and competent in their understanding application of mathematics.
Children are encouraged and taught to read from the time they enter the school and every effort is made to ensure that they read with understanding.  As they progress through the school they are encouraged to write creatively whilst being aware of the necessity of correct grammar, spelling and handwriting.

Each term a theme is planned by the teachers as a core for the work to be tackled during that particular period of the academic year.  Within this theme, careful attention is paid to the legal requirements of the National Curriculum.

The children are encouraged to extend their schoolwork at home with the parents\carers and as they become older, this work should be seen as a form of preparation for Secondary Education.  (A full Homework Policy Document is available from the school office.)

The foundation of spiritual development and general attitudes towards life are important features during the primary years.  Through our Religious Education and our whole ethos of Christian beliefs, children are made aware of their responsibilities as members of our Catholic Community.

Sex Education forms part of our curriculum.  Our aim, through close links with the Religious Education syllabus, is to enhance personal growth and the promotion of sound personal relationships within an atmosphere of Christian care and love.
